Welcome to the favelas, the heartbeat of Brazil’s hillsides.
See the winnersRocinha is one of the largest favelas in Brazil and in Latin America, home to around 200,000 people on a steep hillside above Rio de Janeiro. Life there is dense, vertical and improvised, and the street is the public realm.
The competition asked for a conceptual public space in the middle of the favela: flexible and transformable, built on what is already there, and carrying the connectivity, sustainability and identity of the community it serves.

Welcome to FAVELAS, the heartbeat of Brazil’s hillsides!
Rocinha, Brazil -stands as one of the largest slums in Brazil and Latin America. Once a rural haven, it swiftly transformed into a bustling urban core on a steep hill, housing around 200,000 residents within Rio de Janeiro. Known for its narrow alleys and intertwined staircases.
The challenge is to design a conceptual public space in the middle of favelas.
