Building at the white cliffs

A minimal intervention at the edge of England, in harmony with the chalk, the grass and the sea.

Get the full brief

The White Cliffs of Dover stand where England meets the Channel: a chalk face carrying centuries of defence, departure and return, and a landscape people come to simply to look out from.

Entrants chose one of three briefs — a viewpoint, green cabins, or a work of art in the landscape — and were asked for a sustainable proposal led by minimalism, harmony and integration with nature rather than by the building itself.

Shubhojeet Sengupta, from Delhi, is a 29-year-old architect with five years of experience in landscape architecture, currently a team leader at the landscape firm Oracles, working on housing, institutional and corporate projects.

Sandeep Dhakar

An architect passionate about crafting spaces that harmonize functionality, aesthetics and sustainability. With a blend of creativity and technical expertise, he specializes in designing structures that stand as witness to architectural innovation and enrich the lives of those who inhabit them. He currently works as a junior architect on a housing project in Mumbai.

Brijmohan Singh Kushwah

From Gwalior, an artist who loves to explore and meet new people. He has won many national and international art competitions, which makes him confident in his artistic and imaginative skills and helps him visualize and explain his ideas. His journey at Oracles has given him valuable skills in conceptualization, aesthetics, planning and execution.

Concept story

Drawing inspiration from the vernacular Dover Castle and its architectural features, our vision focuses on preserving the pristine visuals of the towering white and green Dover cliffs. To achieve this, we made the strategic decision to nestle the cabins within the natural steep slopes of the site.

Cliff Cabins

Taking cues from the tunnels beneath Dover Castle, our design incorporates connecting open passages adorned with portals crafted from Kentish flagstone at every turn. Much like a castle provides safety and security for a king, our Cliff Cabins offer occupants a sense of safety and comfort within the embrace of Mother Nature, enhancing their overall experience and creating a truly mesmerizing environment.

About Chanhee

I am Chanhee Yang, a 2nd-year student from Hanyang University School of Architecture. I like sharing my projects and ideas with others, so I made an Instagram account, ‘chax_xnee’. Communicating with other university students through Instagram, I was able to continue my passion and interest in architecture.

Concept story

The concept began with Christopher Nolan’s film ‘Dunkirk’. In the movie, I was inspired by the scene where warships and civilian ships headed to Dunkirk to rescue soldiers. I want to honour the courage and dedication of those ships, and make visitors think deeply about the meaning of the Strait of Dover.

One panoramic view

The historical and present panoramic views are combined into one. In the historical view, the black stone and water space symbolize warships and civilian ships, and the Strait of Dover in the past. The present view is the scenery of the Strait of Dover today.

Working internationally

Working with international architects is a valuable experience because of the exchange of perspectives and philosophies of architecture. I will also learn how they get a project and work with their team members. Architecture is teamwork, not an individual.

Future goals

Architecture is the storytelling of space. The space should be poetic, emotional and meaningful. Architects should aim to design spaces suitable for these. To fulfil the duties of the architect is my goal.

About Toby

Toby Rosimo, a 4th-year architecture student from the University of the Philippines – Diliman. I’ve wanted to become an architect since the 7th grade because of its opportunities to tangibly transform our communities, challenge our conventions, and sustain our natural environment. My love for architecture drives me to explore everything about the field — master new programs and technologies, engage with competitions, professionals and forums, and consult every available learning resource.

Concept story

The final concept for my design came into being while I was inattentively sketching during my STS class. The question I often asked myself was how can architecture move us forward into a future of innovation, diversity and sustainability. As the Dover Cliffs manifested all three elements through their history and cultural significance, it felt natural to integrate my design approach into a spatial experience that captures these essential principles.

Future goals

The closest attainable goal, so far, is to finish my studies and become a licensed architect. I intend to drastically fix Metro Manila’s state of urbanization and architecture through my knowledge and skill set. Other than that, I plan to partner with non-profit organizations in formulating transformative interventions for remote local communities in my country. I would love to give back the privileges of my practice and orient the practice of architecture in the Philippines into a more holistic, sustainable and purpose-driven approach.
