A restaurant at the drowned village

Design a sustainable restaurant and bar at Lake Resia’s iconic bell tower.

In 1950 the village of Curon was submerged when a dam raised the level of Lake Resia. Its houses, streets and fields disappeared under the water and only the bell tower of the fourteenth-century church was left standing, rising alone out of the lake.

The competition asked for a sustainable restaurant and bar that works with the tower rather than against it: an addition that respects the memory of the place, sits lightly on the water and the shore, and gives visitors a new way to experience the landscape through the seasons.

About the team

Fatih Shakirov and Timur Abdrakhmanov. We are currently interns at architectural offices in Paris and Rotterdam, as well as Master’s degree students in Architecture at Kazan State University of Architecture and Engineering in Russia. We are also involved in extracurricular projects with the TIArch architectural studio, led by Ilnar and Rezeda Akhtiamov in Kazan.

Our background

In 2023 we both graduated with a Bachelor’s degree in Architecture from the same university. Our background includes professional and student competitions, internships in local and European offices, and hands-on experience as practising architects. Each of us brings a unique set of skills and perspectives, united by a shared passion for architecture and design.

Concept story

The Tower and the Horizon, iconic and unseen, the Land and the Lake: the history of the site and an innovative reinterpretation. These guiding ideas helped us immerse ourselves in the atmosphere of this place, reflect on its context, and embrace the iconic image of a solitary, mysterious tower rising from the centre of a lake in northern Italy.

The visitor’s journey

Our goal was to propose a new interpretation of this point of attraction while preserving the feeling of a lone wanderer on the canvas of the lake. We envisioned the visitor’s journey to the tower as a transformative experience, one that mirrors the introspection of a solitary figure asking many questions and finding warmth and answers upon reaching their destination: Spiritual Pendulum.

What it is about

This concept is about creating a place of new impressions, a meeting point where people connect with each other, with human history, and with the surrounding landscape, sky and water.

About the team

Taliia Nurutdinova and Artur Yakovlev-Gilfanov. Both hold a Bachelor of Architecture from KSUAE in Kazan and a Master of Architecture Typology from TU Berlin, with a one-year internship at BIG Copenhagen and a year at UNStudio. Both now work at Topotek1 in Berlin.

Concept story

History and poetry of the place and its scenic landscapes lead to three main principles: invisibility, sensitivity and temporality.

Invisibility

We imagined it to be subtle, non-intrusive and absent of personal ambition. We used slender structures and transparent or reflective materials. There is no structural intervention, no massive foundations, and the footprint is minimised.

Sensitivity

The project gives new sensorial experiences. It cherishes the intimacy of sitting next to the rough historic walls of the bell tower with a backdrop of beautiful scenery.

Temporality

Our proposal adapts to changing water levels that can vary between several metres and winter conditions. It can be easily disassembled, leaving no traces or scars on the place.

Lucio Ceci: Architecture and Urbanism student, 3D artist and rendering specialist with 22 awards in architecture competitions, both in Argentina and internationally.

Hernán Ariel Ríos

Advanced Architecture and Urbanism student and lecturer in Architectural Theory at the Universidad Nacional de Avellaneda, with six awards in architecture competitions.

Enrique Saúl Nazareno Flores

Advanced Architecture and Urbanism student with teaching experience in Architectural Projects, Architectural Theory, Architectural History and the Intervention Laboratory at the Facultad de Arquitectura y Urbanismo in La Plata. He has received 14 awards in national and international architecture competitions.

Concept story

The intricate scale of the bell tower and its unique condition prompted us to reflect on how to intervene appropriately. We realised that almost any form of intervention might compete with its presence. Thus we decided to “construct a landscape” that redefines the surrounding environment and restores the user’s perception of the tower’s scale. Simultaneously, this gesture embraces the surrounding landscape through observation.

The proposal

This fictional landscape, designed as a platform encircling the tower, includes a restaurant, an open-air amphitheatre, a bar and an exhibition area that narrates the local history. Additionally, three terraces integrate seamlessly with the exterior, offering shelter and creating a harmonious connection with the environment.

  • A village submerged under Lake Reschensee in 1950, following the creation of a dam. Only its 14th-century bell tower remains visible, rising from the water and stands as a symbol of the village’s lost history.

  • The Challenge is to design a sustainable restaurant/bar that creatively integrates with the iconic bell tower at Lake Resia.
